Euro cards: two ways to spend euros with Solid at zero fees (Wirex cards)

Wirex cardholders pay zero fees on euro purchases, by depositing EURC into a EUR balance or by holding soUSD with Credit mode on. How to enable each, what counts as a euro purchase, fallbacks and refunds.

If your Solid Card is issued by Wirex, your card is now a euro card: pay zero fees on your euro spending, with no conversion and no FX fee. There are two ways to get there, with EURC or with soUSD, and both are live. This article explains who can use it, how to set up each one, and exactly how each purchase is paid.

Live now: the EUR balance funded with EURC, zero-fee euro payments from it, and zero-fee euro payments from soUSD with Credit mode. Coming soon: yield on your euro balance. It is not available yet; we will announce it in the app when it is.

Who can use it

Euro cards are available on Solid Cards issued by Wirex, which covers the EU and EEA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the other Wirex countries. Cards issued by Rain, including in the United States, are not included for now. See Where the Solid Card is available.

The quickest check: open your card page in the app. If you see Enable EURC spending, you are eligible.

Two ways to spend euros with zero fees

Way 1: deposit EURC into a euro balance

  1. Open the card page in Solid and tap Enable EURC spending.

  2. Send EURC on the Base network to your Solid wallet address (under Settings > Account, or via Add Funds > Crypto > Share your deposit address with the network set to Base). EURC deposits are free.

  3. Pay in euros. A euro purchase your euro balance covers is taken in euros, one for one, with no FX fee.

Your euro balance is held in EURC, a euro stablecoin issued by Circle (the issuer of USDC). One EURC is always worth one euro. Two things to get right: send EURC on Base only, and to your Solid wallet address, not to a Savings vault deposit address, which only accepts its own asset. If you sent EURC on the wrong network or to the wrong address, contact support from the app before doing anything else.

Euro bank transfers are not yet credited to the euro balance: a SEPA or cash deposit still lands in your dollar balance as today.

Way 2: hold soUSD and turn on Credit mode

You do not need to deposit euros at all. Keep your money earning in Savings as soUSD, switch your card to Credit mode, and your euro purchases are covered from your soUSD with no FX fee. Your savings keep earning while you spend. Credit mode follows its own rules, including the collateral and borrowing limits shown in the app.

You can use both: the euro balance is used first, and Credit mode covers the rest.

How euro card payments are taken from your balance

What counts as a euro purchase. A purchase counts as a euro purchase only when the merchant charges you in euros. Purchases in any other currency (pounds, Swedish krona, Thai baht, US dollars and so on) are converted by the card network at your card provider's exchange rate, which includes its FX fee, exactly as before this release. Nothing changes for those purchases, even on a euro card, because your money really was converted.

1. A euro purchase your euro balance covers is paid in euros, one for one. If a shop charges you in euros and your euro balance has enough to pay the whole amount, we take exactly that amount in euros. A €15.00 purchase takes €15.00. Nothing is converted and there is no FX fee.

2. If your euro balance can't cover the whole purchase, it is paid from your dollar balance. When your euro balance is short, even by a cent, the whole purchase is paid from your dollar balance (USDC or your USD savings), converted at the exchange rate at the time of payment, and the FX fee for your tier applies. We never split one purchase between your euro and dollar balances. With Credit mode on and enough soUSD, the purchase is covered from your soUSD instead, with no FX fee.

3. You are only charged one exchange rate per purchase. However a purchase is paid, we apply a single conversion to it. We never convert the same purchase twice.

4. The FX fee only applies when your money was actually converted.

  • A euro purchase paid from your euro balance: no FX fee.

  • A euro purchase covered by soUSD in Credit mode: no FX fee.

  • A euro purchase paid from your dollar balance: the FX fee for your tier.

  • A purchase in any other currency: your card provider's rate and FX fee, unchanged.

The FX fee for each tier is in Solid fees and limits: the complete overview.

5. Refunds come back in dollars, at the rate you paid.

  • Paid in dollars: a refund goes to your dollar balance as USDC, even if you paid for the purchase from your euro balance.

  • Same rate as the purchase: it is valued at the rate the purchase was charged at, not the rate on the day of the refund. A full refund gives back what the purchase cost you, however rates have moved since.

  • Cashback is taken off: any cashback you earned on the purchase is subtracted from the refund.

  • No matching purchase: a credit that doesn't match a purchase on your card is converted at the rate on the day it is processed.

Good to know

Do I have to deposit EURC? No. Hold soUSD in Savings and turn on Credit mode on your card, and your euro purchases are covered with no FX fee.

Do I still earn cashback on euro purchases? Yes. Euro purchases earn the same cashback as any other eligible card purchase, by your Rewards tier. See How does Solid Rewards work?

Is my euro balance affected by the USD/EUR rate? No. It is held in EURC, so it is always worth the same in euros between the day you deposit and the day you spend.

Where do I get EURC? On most major exchanges. Withdraw it on the Base network to your Solid wallet address.

Is there a swap behind each euro purchase? No. A euro purchase paid from your euro balance moves euros only, with no crypto-to-crypto swap. This keeps your records simpler, but Solid does not provide tax advice.
